At COABE 2015, many adult literacy educators were talking about the potential of smartphones as educational tools for adult learners. With more adult learners owning smartphones and using them as their primary way of accessing the Internet, using smartphones effectively with adult learners is becoming a must. Adult learners can receive information from their adult learning centers, learn new concepts, and practice their skills while waiting in lines or going about their daily routines.
So, when we heard about the Adult Literacy XPRIZE earlier this year, we were really excited about the potential. Since then, we have been learning more about the prize and sincerely hope that educators and app developers will pool their expertise and passion to help the around 36 million adults in the US who read at less than a 4th grade level. The XPRIZE is offering a number of monetary incentives to create first class apps for adult literacy learning, including a $3 million grand prize! The XPRIZE is being underwritten by the Barbara Bush Foundation and Dollar General. To find out more about the XPRIZE visit their site at http://adultliteracy.xprize.org/

The new adult literacy smartphone apps have a great potential for enhancing the work of adult literacy educators across the U.S. and internationally. Good luck to all the teams and thank you for working on this challenge!
